Making optimum use of storage units potential

In last decade, there has been a sudden spurt in number of people who opt for external or self storage. Tough economy and paucity of space are among the driving forces responsible for growing popularity of self storage providers. Though everyone can easily look for different providers, negotiate with them and then select best provider but one basic thing which is lacking in most of consumers of storage is choice of right storage units.
As many storage providers charge for space used, they don’t tell their customers how to make optimum use of storage units. All they want is profit and thus customers tend to opt for large storage units than what is actually required and end up paying more to storage providers. Following are few tips which will help you to pack more stuff in same size storage units than what you might not be able to achieve earlier:
1)    Pack tightly: If you are storing clothes or items like sceneries, utensils etc., it is very important that you should pack them in right manner. Compress them as much as you can and also don’t forget to stack books and other things one over other before packing them as a bundle. If you are going to pack each item individually you are definitely going to need bigger storage units. When you are stacking one thing over another, ensure you are putting up largest thing in the bottom and smallest at the top. This way, not only your bundle would be stable to store but also you can also use the empty space in sides to stuff more stuff.
2)    Nature of items: Nature of items will largely govern the size of storage units. Fragile items ask to be packed separately and carefully, thus you would need more space and larger storage units.  When you are stacking things, keep in mind that only put those things below which can bear weight. If you put things over fragile items, they are bound to break. Instead of saving few dollars you would end up losing several hundred or even thousands of dollars if you don’t keep this simple thing in your mind while doing packing of your items in storage units.
3)    Duration of Storage: The duration of storage also can determine your size of storage units. In case you are going to store it for long term or don’t think you would be taking out things frequently, and then it is best to just stack them in minimum possible space. However, if you think that you are going to take them out and then again put them back, the amount of storage space needed to store them would increase and thus would size of storage units. If you use items frequently, then you have to pack them in such a manner that they can be easily put out or put back without disturbing other things around. This way, you need more spacing and hence large size of storage units for same stuff.
